Biography and career

Born in 1954, in Arcos de Valdevez, he graduated in the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra in 1978.

He completed the second special course at the Centro de Estudos Judiciàrios (school for magistrates of Portugal) in 1982 and trained at the Judicial Court of Vila Nova de Famalicão. In 1984 he became first instance judge at the Judicial Court of Amares, and then in the judicial district of Paredes. He served as an elected member of the General Council of the Association of Portuguese Judges between 2000 and 2003. He was seconded as an auxiliary judge to the Court of Appeal of Oporto in 2002. In 2003 he was appointed as a judge of the same Court of Appeal. He was elected a member of the High Council of the Judiciary between 2007 and 2010. He took office as President of the Court of Appeal of Oporto on May 2015.
