Biography and career
In May 2026 Judge Mirta Matić assumed the position of the first female President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia.
After graduating from the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb, in 1992, she began her professional career as a legal trainee in a law office, subsequently working as corporate counsel in a leading commercial company in Zagreb. She passed the Judicial Examination in 1994.
In 1999 she embarked upon a judicial career following her appointment as a judge of the Commercial Court in Zagreb.
Following a three-year temporary assignment to the High Commercial Court of the Republic of Croatia, she was appointed judge of that Court in 2011. Throughout her judicial career at the High Commercial Court, she has devoted particular attention to EU law and ECHR law. She served as President of the Department for Research and Analysis of the Case Law of the CJEU and the ECtHR, as well as the Court’s Spokesperson.
Since May 2026 she has served as judge and President of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Croatia.
She regularly lectures at professional seminars and conferences on various topics in the fields of civil and commercial law. Furthermore, she serves as an examiner for the Judicial Examination and the Insolvency Practitioner Examination. She was also a member of the Croatian Judicial Council for one term, from 2019 to 2023.
In her capacity as President of the Supreme Court, she additionally acts as President of the State Electoral Commission of the Republic of Croatia.
