Biography and career

FRANCISCO MARÍN CASTÁN is the President of the First Chamber of the Supreme Court, which he joined as a judge in January 2000. In 2020, he also took over vice-president functions and, since October 2022, those of president of the Supreme Court.

Born in 1952, he entered the Judicial Career in 1977, graduating as number one in his class, and before being promoted to the rank of a Justice of the Supreme Court, he was a first instance investigating judge in La Roda (Albacete) and San Roque (Cádiz), an investigating judge in San Sebastián, a judge of the Provincial Courts of Huelva and Madrid, and a judge of the Technical Office of the Supreme Court.

In addition to many articles on civil, criminal and procedural law, he has published two books on civil appeals in cassation, one on case law concerning trading companies and a fourth on case law relative to civil liability.
He has also participated in a collective work dealing with Commentaries on the Civil Code and in an annotated Civil Code, has directed a work about Commentaries on the Civil Procedure Law, is director and co-author of a Civil Law Handbook for Lawyers, and regularly participates in the training courses of the General Council of the Judiciary, as well as in seminars and conferences organized by Universities, Bar Associations and other public law institutions.
