Biography and career
Mr Eric de Formanoir de la Cazerie was born in Ghent on 5 April 1968. He studied law at the Universities of Namur and Louvain (UCLouvain) and went on to obtain further degrees in European law (Exeter, England) and tax law (ESSF, Brussels). Mr de Formanoir was a member of the Brussels Bar from 1993 to 1997.
In 1997 Mr de Formanoir was appointed Deputy Public Prosecutor (substitut du procureur du Roi) at the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office, where he served in the economic, financial and tax section from 2000 to 2010. In 2008 Mr de Formanoir was Deputy Director of the Strategic Unit (cellule stratégique) of the Minister of Justice. From 2010 to 2016 he was Deputy Prosecutor General (substitut général) at the Brussels Labour Court of Appeal, and during the same period, from 2010 to 2014, chaired the French-speaking college of the Advisory Council of the Judiciary (Conseil consultatif de la magistrature). From 2014 to 2016 he was also seconded on a part-time basis to the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Brussels Court of Appeal, in its economic, financial and tax division.
In 2016 Mr de Formanoir was appointed Judge (conseiller) at the Court of Cassation under Article 259 of the Judicial Code, and in April 2024 was designated First President of the Court for a term of five years.
